Why Art is Cool

I hope that art blog readers agree that art is the antidote to faceless stuff-buying! I feel very passionate about art, The Arts and Crafts movement, and the Fair Trade movement.

As an artist, it's daunting to squeeze yourself in there among the millions of others to display and promote your work. But amazingly, just as in life, when you have a relationship with those around you, when you give them a reason to know you and care about your work, they begin to support it.

It's hard to know how to change your lifestyle from Target and Wal-Mart to buying food, home items and personal items which are made by your friends, but I hope to find out. And I find that my own fortunes rise or fall with the desire of others to choose my work over what they see in the Pottery Barn.

I hope we can all get through the convulsions of globalization, because that is some of what is happening in all of this. If we all want to see the preservation of humanity in our products, let's produce and support beautiful things which we give to friends!
